Chris Van Goethem started working as a stage manager in the eighties and toured around Europe with several Belgian companies. In the nineties he started to work as a consultant and educator in technical theatre.
He consulted the creation of the Flemish professional profiles and standards for theatre technicians, and the start-up of several education programs in initial, higher, and adult education. Today, he consults the Social fund for the performing arts in educational and skills matters.
He has been involved in several international projects building taxonomies and classification systems, developing methodologies for the description of competences and occupations, and analysing the labour and education situation in the performing arts sector, like TTT-LPT (2005-2009) including the numeral skills classification system, TTF (2009), CAPE-SV (2009-2011), including the syntax standard for the sector and Backbone (2011 – 2014) including the knowledge skill relations and classification.
Chris Van Goethem chaired the ESCO sectoral reference group for arts, entertainment and recreation, where he developed the occupation and skills classification. He is was an active member of the TALQ research project (2015 – 2017),developing an overall view on sectoral use of ESCO and LAAR (2017 – 2019), which is developing learning analytics and augmented reality applications based on ESCO competences. He was involved the TeBeVat project (2016-2018-, researching validation and portfolio techniques using ESCO structured and classified competences and the Creative Flip project, developing a statistical overview of the Cultural and Creative Sectors and industries. He is involved in the Pace-Vet (2021-2024) project develloping a structured portfolio based assessment system, the ESSENCE project (2021-2024) writing a EQF5 sound specialist profile. He is part of the INSPIRE project, develloping a set of competences for the performing arts sector on sustainability, entrepreneurship, resiliance and digital skills.
He developed the recognition and assessment procedures for the Flemish theatre-technical profiles, the Cue One Go self assessment project, Scentec in the Balkans and for the ESCO based ETTE project (2014-2017), which has developed a European safety passport and E-LEV (2021-2022) that digitised the process.
He is a teacher, is responsible for the Expertise Centre for Technical Theatre of RITCS School of Arts, Erasmus University College Brussels, and is involved in research on education, competence management, history of technical theatre and safety and sustainability. He is vice chair for distant learning of the OISTAT Education Commission (Organisation international des scénographes, techniciens et architectes de théâtre) and board member of STEPP (the Belgian Technicians organisation) and ETTEC (uropean Council for Qualification and Certification of Stage and Event Technicians).
